Maybe the experience is over, but parts of it still show up.
You can understand that something happened a long time ago and still notice it affecting you now.
Perhaps you overthink other peopleâs moods or behaviour. Find it hard to switch off. Shut down when something feels too much. Feel responsible for keeping everyone else okay. Notice the same patterns appearing in different relationships or situations.
Or perhaps you simply know that what youâve lived through changed you, and you want to understand how.
Anam Cara is for people who donât need their experiences minimised, polished or turned into a neat life lesson.
This guide gives you somewhere to begin making those connections.
Inside the guide, youâll begin to:
-
See the connection between past experiences and present-day patterns: Explore how what happened may still be influencing the way you respond, relate and think today.
-
Put words around what has been difficult to make sense of:Â A space to capture your thoughts and feelings after therapy, deepening your understanding and reinforcing insights.Â
-
Emotional processing:Â Dedicated pages for processing difficult emotions, reinforcing self-compassion and providing clarity in times of vulnerability.Â
-
Look underneath familiar beliefs and responses:Â Begin exploring where some of the things you believe about yourself, other people and the world may have come from.
-
Think about what you want to carry forward differently:Â Move beyond simply understanding the past and begin considering what you want to do with what you now know.
- Â Build a small toolkit for reflection:Â Explore journalling and other practices you can use outside the guide, including mindfulness, meditation and visualisation.

A note from our founder
Created from lived experience, not from the sidelines.
Anam Cara was created for people who have been through a lot and discovered that the world often makes little room for what those experiences leave behind.
I came to this work through my own experiences of grief, complex family circumstances, life-threatening illness and the long process of making sense of what those experiences can shape, alongside a career shaped by the power of words and communication.
Anam Cara exists to create thoughtful tools for people who want to understand themselves more clearly without being told to shrink their experience, rush their healing or turn everything into a lesson.
Here, you wonât be asked to pretend pain was a gift, convince yourself everything happened for a reason, or turn difficult experiences into something more comfortable for other people.
Some things are painful. Some are unfair. Some leave marks we would never have chosen. The point is not to rewrite the past into something prettier.
It is to understand what happened, what it may have shaped, and what you want to do with that information now.
